Heading to the Falls

Post  Swift_Assassin on Sat Jul 23, 2011 10:14 pm

So basically, my family, a family friend, and I will be on vacation in Niagara Falls, Canada from Monday to Friday this week. Which is a coming as a great relief that we'd be escaping the heatwave for slightly cooler temperatures. However, I won't have much access to the internet while I'm there.

I just hope that the hotel rooms have air conditioners since just last night my AC flat out died, which we then replaced with a slightly better AC, just to discover it's functionality steadily declined to only half power by 8:00 am. I don't even think it's working right now and I have propped up window fan to help me survive the night.

So yeah, I know there isn't much activity right at this moment, but if there is, I won't really be able to post if I'm needed before I come back.

I'd take temps in the 80s over the high 90s I've been in the last few days. It's a full ten degrees cooler right now on the New York side right at the time of this post.

There's a heat wave? Must be a local thing...

It's been hovering around and above 100 here for the past three days.

I know what you mean about escaping it as much as you can. Have fun~!

Enjoy your time at the Falls but don't play in any barrels even if someone dares you to or offers you money to do so. lol!

We can wait for you so don't worry. It's really slow but I hope we can pick up for your arrival back on the net ... and hopefully to a better, cooler outlook.

Don't worry, it's not my first time at the falls. I went there in '01 and '02, I believe. So I already know that barrels seem to make good vehicles when going off the Horseshoe Falls. I don't believe thats the same for the American Falls, but maybe all those jagged rocks eroded over the years I have been there last.

One other thing I still remember was that I had a dream back when I was either four or five of me and my family walking to one of the breakfast buffets in Niagara falls, a place we didn't eat until my second visit there. I had a deja vu moment from a dream 7 years prior.

Considering the Canadian dollar is stronger, I might consider it.

Brief as possible, as typing on the Wii w/o keyboard sucks. Would use sis's laptop, but I haven't asked to. Got showered by the Falls. Very refreshing after heatwave. Wondering why $2 dollar coins are called toonies. Did they name it the dollar coins while watching Loony Toons? No offence, but I thought it was weird. Also wondering if taxes are high because tourist trap, or just used to low taxes. Hopefully, if/when I post again, I'll have access to laptop.

This looks much longer than I expected it to be.

Oh don't worry we joke about the loonies and toonies too. The loonies started with the reference because there were loons on them. I guess toonies just came about because the ones were loons. It was also a joke that Canadians were just making a joke of ourselves calling ourselves loons by using a loon. Lots of fun stuff around those.

And no, all taxes in Ontario suck. They have PST and GST which is now HST and it's all PITA - pain in the ass. Lucky us in Alberta with only GST and threatening to destroy the government if they even mention HST.

That's interesting about the dream. Quite a deja vu moment!

Glad you are enjoying the cool water sprays and all Smile

Damn, that sucks. Not for you so much, but considering this is a tourist trap and a bottle of Coke gets increased 50 cents each time you get closer to the Falls, it's bad. I can get a bottle for $1.50 at the hotel, but the moment I get to where all the fun and food is, it becomes $2, finally becoming $2.50 when I get to the souvenir shop after getting off the Maid of the Mist.

I figured why loonies were called that, but seeing a bear on the back of the toonie made less sense.

Well, we ended up going to a casino to end the night. My mother lost $60, but allowed us to have free parking, my sister and friend lost $5 dollars...and I won $5. I went the whole night without playing, but I offered one of my fives for a dollar machine before we left and we ended up doubling it. Makes me a bit happy since I didn't have much to start with.

EDIT:Back Thursday. We did everything we had planned to do by yesterday and since rainstorms came in, we would have been stuck inside the entire day, so we went home with some more money in our pockets than we would have had if we left tomorrow.
